catering-and-event-managementI am Mercy Akpan, CEO of Ebony Catering and Event Management set up to serve the needs of residents in Akwa Ibom and environs. I worked with Ibom Hotel and Golf Resorts for 5 years, where I gathered some experience in culinary services and other aspects of Hotel Management. Afterwards, I left to start my own business. We serve both local and international dishes at events, and also do Event Planning and Management for clients.

I ventured into business in 2018 after I left my last job at Marina Resort, Calabar and relocated to Uyo. I found a way to be my own boss after working for so many years, and also put my experience to the fore, to serve a wide range of people.

My business is lucrative because people cannot do without food especially at events despite the competition.

My starting capital was N1,200.

My high point was winning the Ibom Food Festival 2019 competition at the Christmas Village in the presence of Akwa Ibom State governor, His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel and his entourage. I got a trophy and a cash prize. However, when there are low sales and low profit, it affects my business, especially during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Business has been very dull for us in the industry.

I have thought of giving up at a point but I always encourage myself and press on.

I have people working with me. I have a Finance and Administrative Manager. I work as an Operations Manager, then I engage labourers. My registration with CAC is in progress.

Chef Stella Nana and Chef Joseph Fagbeji are the people I look up to as my business mentors.

I seek partnership with policymakers and investors to scale my business through Assets Financing to acquire an oven and a hand mixer.

To fellow and upcoming foodprepreneurs, I advise that they be persistent, and have a good knowledge of the business, and also be creative with food preparation.

Entrepreneurs can create job opportunities, increase revenue drive for the government and also complement efforts at reducing labour turnover. Let this story inspire you to venture into the catering and event management business.
