If you are thinking of starting phone repairs and accessories business, this article is just for you. Nsikak Isaiah Udoekong is an indigene of Ikono LGA of Akwa Ibom State. He is a graduate of Political Science and Public Administration. He is the CEO of Authentic Phones/Repairs Empire located at 10 Ukana Offot Street, Uyo.

Nsikak ventured into phone repairs and accessories business in 2012. According to him, “Viewing my poor family background, it was hard to get even one square meal, I became determined to do any legit business that could place food on my table and also raise my academic status. I noticed lots of persons had needs for these services and the technical hands were few and costly since they were already kings in the business, so I disrupted, seized, and filled the gap”.

There are over 150 million mobile phones in Nigeria, people from various backgrounds use mobile phones, and most of them need to make repairs and also buy phone accessories. Phone repairs/accessories business is a very lucrative one as every person both rich and poor living in the urban or rural area, has mobile phone needs for communication. Nsikak says that as an entrepreneur he filled the vacuum by rendering quality service and in the process improving his life with the proceeds which is very encouraging and that with consistency and diligence one can make a huge fortune from the business just like him.

He started his phone repair business in 2012 with just N9500 which he generated from selling his NEC 3 mobile phone. He began under an umbrella at Udo Eduok junction along Aka road and later moved to the University of Uyo main gate after serving as an apprentice to his boss Hon. Edet Sunday Jombo who sponsored his training.

His major high point has been his ability to sponsor himself through the university, register his business with SMEDAN, become certified as an entrepreneur after undergoing the required courses and training under the My Entrepreneurial Goal program(megp) and also being able to train more than 8 persons on phone repairs.

However, his major low points have been his inability to render the services required by some of his customers as a result of a lack of phone parts or goods.

In the face of challenges, Nsikak had thought about giving up when he was struggling to balance school work with the business and the time when hoodlums broke into his shop and made away with people’s phones. He was downcast but was motivated that every challenge is a test to raise him to the next height in life.

The business is registered with SMEDAN and the process of registration with CAC is ongoing. Nsikak works with his apprentices and each person has assigned roles operating in different departments of repairs, sales of accessories, downloading and charging of phones.

Nsikak’s mentors in business include Mr. Ini Ekwere, Hon. Edet Jumbo CEO of Edeejom Ventures and Don Favour CEO of Don Favour communications.

Nsikak looks forward to engaging with policymakers and investors etc, to scale his business by the implementation of favourable policies such as a reduction in import duties and local government revenue demand, adequate power supply not just for his but other small scale businesses, and access to business grants.

To intending entrepreneurs, Nsikak advises, “Just as in every other business, focus, sincerity, diligence, and consistency has been my watchword, apply it and you will succeed”.

Entrepreneurs are the driving force of any economy, ranging from the creation of employment opportunities for others and also being self-employed. Entrepreneurs need to seize and disrupt the ecosystem by providing timely and quality goods and services needed by customers and generating income for themselves and revenue for the government through taxes and levies and rents, etc.
