How to make liquid soap in Nigeria

To save money on buying bottles upon bottles of liquid soap, some Nigerians are now making their own liquid soaps in the comfort of their own homes.

Some have turned it into a company and are reaping the rewards handsomely.

For as little as N10,000, anyone interested in making liquid soap can produce over 80 liters. Calculate how much money you can make by converting it to cash.

Are you ready to study the fundamentals right now? If you answered yes, keep reading!

You’ll learn how to make it for business in this article, but the same concepts apply to those who want to produce it at home.

In Nigeria and around the world, liquid soap is widely used. Morning Fresh and Mama Lemon are two of Nigeria’s most popular liquid soap brands, available in practically every Nigerian home, restaurant, and café.

If you want to go beyond the basics of cold process soap making, make a batch of liquid soap. Liquid soap takes a little more time to make than bar soap.

The fundamental difference between liquid and bar soap is the alkali used to saponify the oils. Whether liquid or hard, all soap starts with a simple chemical interaction between oils and an alkali.

In bar soaps, sodium hydroxide is utilized to induce a chemical reaction.

Potassium hydroxide, an unique type of lye for liquid soap, is used in the chemical reaction in liquid soaps. To ensure that the oils are properly saponified, more lye is usually added to liquid soap.

Why Should You Launch A Liquid Soap Manufacturing Company In Nigeria?

  • The production is straightforward.
  • With as little as ₦10,000, you may start a business and be up and running in no time.
  • It is possible to produce liquid soap from the convenience of your home.
  • Profits are good in this industry.
  • As a result of its high level of patronage, demand has increased.
  • Chemicals are available for purchase at local chemical stores.

Ingredients in liquid soap

There is an alkali variant and an oil variant.

Liquid soap has a somewhat different alkali component. Sodium hydroxide is used in producing  bar soap, while potassium hydroxide is used to make liquid soap.

Potassium hydroxide is harder to come by and comes in the form of flakes rather than beads. Despite the fact that the flakes are easier to work with, they are nonetheless dangerous, needing the use of gloves and safety glasses.

Additional components include coconut oil, olive oil, rice bran oil, another oil such as soybean (a few non-GMO brands are available), safflower or grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, filtered water, liquid vegetable glycerin, and whatever scent or color you choose to add.

All of these materials, with the exception of potassium hydroxide, are available naturally.

Note: A procedure called saponification eliminates all potassium hydroxide throughout the soap-making process. It’s no longer corrosive at this point.

Liquid soap manufacturing equipment

Just like making hot process soap, you’ll need a slow cooker, a stick blender, a quart jar, a potato masher, and plastic stirring spoons. Because this recipe is measured in ounces, you’ll also need a kitchen scale.

Making Liquid Soap: The Recipe

This delightful liquid soap can be used as a shampoo, body wash, hand soap, or even dish soap!

Ingredients

  • 10 Ounces Coconut Oil
  • 3 Ounces Rice Bran Oil
  • 10 Ounces Olive Oil
  • 13 Ounces Other Oil
  • 5.5 Ounces Sunflower Oil
  • 9 Ounces Koh, A.K.A. Potassium Hydroxide
  • 25 Ounces Distilled Water
  • To dilute the soap you will need 60 ounces of distilled water
  • 16 Ounces Liquid Vegetable Glycerine
  • Your choice of 3 Ounces Of Essential Oil Or Fragrance Oil
  • Use A Very Small Amount Of Your Favorite Natural Colorant

Instructions

To begin, make sure your workplace is well ventilated, cover everything with newspaper, then put on your gloves and goggles. Make sure there are no dogs or children running around when you start this activity.

Second, after measuring your oils, add them into the crockpot. Remember that in this recipe, we’ll be measuring all of the ingredients by weight rather than volume, so you’ll need a scale.

Third, in your crockpot, melt all of the oils on high. I start by cooking my ingredients in a smaller crockpot, then transfer them to a larger one once the liquids are incorporated.

Using pure water, half-fill a glass or stainless steel dish. KOH should be measured out and slowly poured into the water while stirring (never the other way around). It’s common for it to make moaning noises as it breaks down.

Once the water/KOH combination has been well mixed, add it to the oils. Combine the solutions by hand first, then use the stick blender to puree them. If the mixture is lumpy and wants to separate, don’t panic. Take a break after around 5 minutes of combining.

Cover and cook on high for 30-60 minutes, then lower to low.

Return to stir or combine every now and then. It’ll start to take shape soon. It will resemble petroleum jelly in appearance after around 2 hours.

Because it’s heavy and sticky, it’s becoming more difficult to work with.

I use a stainless steel potato masher to make it simpler to break up. Once it appears to be cooked through with no opaque parts, you can test it.

Finally, put it to the test by swirling a tiny spoonful of the mixture vigorously in a cup of boiling water. Everything will take some time to dissolve. If the water is clear, proceed to the dilution stage. If the sky is cloudy, keep cooking.

Dilution of liquid soap

Once the soap paste is entirely boiled, you can dilute it.

To begin, heat 60 ounces of water until it is hot but not boiling. (Weigh instead of measuring by volume.)

Second, add the liquid vegetable glycerin. Toss everything together thoroughly.

Then pour the mixture into the crockpot and whisk or mash as needed. Set the thermostat to a low setting, cover, and walk away. You can leave it for a few hours and come back to it later. Some people  prefer to do this in the evening so that they can leave it overnight.

After that, thoroughly whisk the soap in the morning and set it alone for an hour or longer. The undiluted soap paste should float to the top, leaving a layer of good liquid soap underneath.

You can spoon the lovely stuff into pint or quart jars and set away the thick rubbish. Then, if you want, you may scent and colour each one separately.

Finally, turn off the heat and add a bit more water to the thick material that’s left. Allow this to sit overnight, and in the morning, it should be entirely diluted.

Depending on the consistency you want, you may need to add a little more distilled water.

Start with a small amount to avoid it getting too thin (1 teaspoon).

Please keep in mind that all ingredients must be weighed by weight!

How to package your liquid soap for business

Use distinctive and long-lasting containers to make your liquid soap packaging stand out. If you go to a big chemical store, you’ll see that there are a lot of different containers to pick from. Alternatively, huge markets like as Aba, Lagos, and others.

How long does liquid soap take to make?

It depends entirely on the scale you’re working with. ₦20,000 is a fantastic place to start if you’re operating on a small scale. The materials are sold for the lowest price possible. Use reused bottles to package the soap.

For large-scale liquid soap production, ₦500,000-₦1,000,000 is an ideal starting point.

This will cover the wage of the employee as well as transportation costs prior to purchasing a car. Some supplies should be bought in bulk.

The liquid soap industry’s profitability

The profit exceeds the return on investment by at least 50%. If you spend $5,000 on components, you’ll get a liquid soap worth $15,000. Profit margins are equivalent to those of bar soap production.

After all of your expenses have been deducted, the remaining sum is your profit. You’ll make more money if you produce and sell more.
